Blue Steel - Categories not behaving properly on front page (8 posts)

    Hi,

I am using Blue_Steel 3.17 on a fresh Wordpress 2.9.1 stock setup (via Installatron). It's a beautiful theme, by the way.

Have you ever experienced an issue where only uncategorized posts show up in any of the front page sections (slider, or bottom left/right/center)? Strange, I know...

I made some fake posts under my specified categories so I would have some initial content for testing. After installing the theme then assigning the slider/bar categories under "Appearance -> Blue_Steel Options", everything is strangely empty. When I switched the slider/bar categories back to uncategorized, I noticed that the default Wordpress "Hello World" post appears properly (I had forgotten to delete it). So on a hunch, I "uncategorized" my posts one-by-one, and sure enough, one-by-one they all show up fine, including any 710x300 slider images I associated with them. But no matter what I try, no posts associated with a category I create ever show up anywhere on the front page. Choosing any of my own categories in the Blue_Steel options screen results in a mostly empty page.

It feels like there is something simple and silly that I am overlooking/doing wrong which would cause this...? I know it's not a browser rendering issue because the same behavior happens on IE6 (PC), Firefox 3.6 (PC/Mac), and Safari 4 (Mac).

Thx in advance for any ideas! And keep up the excellent work.

    Hi milo:

    http://www.beatwerks.net/
http://www.beatwerks.net/tmpimg/bluesteel1.jpg (screenshot of my relevant blue_steel settings)

There's not really much to see in the "broken" state (with my categories assigned to the front page areas, and my posts assigned to those categories)... the sliders are empty and the lower three columns are mangled.

I'll be checking regularly if you want me to change something on the backend.

    Thx!

I also noticed that if I set the slider to use Uncategorized then dual-assign Uncategorized + the real category to my posts at the same time, it works and even displays the proper category on the clickable "arrows" (but that doesn't solve the issues on the bottom half of the page, since I'd have to make them also use "Uncategorized" to display anything, and those assigned categories are supposed to be three different children of the slider category).

    Hi milo:

I had to put the site in maintenance mode since it's a mess right now, but I've emailed you a user/pass so you can login (http://www.beatwerks.net/wp-admin) then have permissions to still view the site (http://www.beatwerks.net).

If you get a second, have a look... thx!

Upload images to all posts, tested with uncategorized category and works well, surprisingly not with any other.

Might be wp install related or theme, but theme was tested on various servers as well as new sites.

See this thread about BlueSteel and also the cashFlake website.

slider at the top of the front page:
open theme options under the appearance tab
    set your slider categories

also set the other theme options
note: you need minimum 3 posts to work with theme

no custom fields to use ;P

    icons/images in slider et al:
upload images to the post, then the slider will show it automatically

    add your twitter username at

    bluesteel/inc/twt.php

php twitter_messages('your twitter name here', 2, false, true, '»', true, false, true)

    Hi milo:

Thanks very much for looking into this. At least now I know for sure that it's not just me and I'm not going crazy :-) The WP install is completely fresh for this new site and shouldn't be customized in any way, unless Installatron does something different by default than a manual install would.

I always search forums before posting, so I did already find that previous Blue Steel / cashflake thread including the instructions you copied (that was how I was able to get my twitter feed configured on the site--I'm now following you, BTW).

All in all, there's no 100% requirement for me to use BlueSteel and you offer many other excellent options, so I will see if I have better luck with another for the site, in the interest of time.

    Thanks again!
